Review: The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
April 28, 2017
I read this book in one sitting. I just kept reading and reading and then all of a sudden, I had just finished it. Any book that comes out of my birthday (11th April) I’m sure to be at least a little bit interested. If you’re in the mood for a quick-read, cutesy YA contemporary, that isn’t overly gushy then this is for you.
Molly, the main character is so relatable. With her array of emotions and lack of self-confidence, watching her grow into herself through the course of the novel is something special. The main strength to this book is the cast of characters, I loved the twins mum’s, Molly’s friends and Reid. I must say, I do think Albertalli is a fantastic author, she always manages to write relatable characters and I always enjoy her plots and character arcs. Definitely a contemporary favourite of mine.
Whilst I recognise that people might be offended by the whole ‘chubby girl doesn't love herself until she gets a boyfriend’. Personally, and I am in a position where I can voice certain opinions on this subject, I didn't feel it happened like that in this particular novel. I felt Molly was her own person from the beginning, and whilst she may not have been confident as such, she definitely, to me was the most memorable character. I wouldn't call this book problematic, I think the romance between two seventeen year olds, for me will always seem unrealistic, simply because I couldn't imagine it happening that way, but I digress that is my opinion. Truth be told it is the same story, of a young insecure girl who wants a boyfriend and finally gets one. Although that might be the case, and given my feelings towards contemporary and YA romance as a whole - which is negative - for me to still enjoy this novel, that is saying something. However, I did think Molly and Reid were adorable and I was rooting for Reid as soon as him and Molly had their first interaction. I did feel some connection or similarities between myself and Molly and that helped me enjoy the book. The other characters, I wasn't too fussed about. I liked Reid and Molly as mentioned before and they were my favourite, but other characters such as Molly’s twin sister Cassie, I found intolerable.
I couldn't be angry whilst reading this. The little things that happened throughout the novel, were cute enough for a cold-hearted cynic like me to actually feel something for a YA romance. It was cute. After finishing this a couple of days ago, I am still thinking about it, remembering something funny that happened. This novel is just one of those YA books that can get you out of the reading slump, and you finish it feeling amused and almost wistful, what a sweet story. I would recommend this!
